Tournament Format

This will consist of two stages.  The first stage is a 5-round Swiss tournament.  Depending on the number of entrants, if you have a record of...

5-0 or 4-1, you will advance to the bracket phase and may also earn a bye in the first round.

3-2, you will advance to the bracket phase, but MUST play in the first round.

2-3, you may be invited to a play-in race.  This race will take place on Wednesday, September 5th, at 9pm EDT, unless ALL runners agree to change the date.  This agreement must take place 24 hours in advance, and must take place before September 9th.

All rounds of this tournament will be best of 1, with the exception of the semifinals and finals, which will be a best of 3.  All rounds, including the best of 3s, will take place over a period of one week.

July 30-August 5 - Swiss Round 1

August 6-12 - Swiss Round 2

August 13-19 - Swiss Round 3

August 20-26 - Swiss Round 4

August 27-September 9 - Swiss Round 5

September 12, 9pm EDT - Play-in race, if neccessary

September 17-23 - BRACKET PHASE - First round

September 24-30 - Second round

October 1-7 - Quarterfinals

October 8-14 - Semifinals (best of 3)

October 15-22 - 3rd place race (best of 1) / Grand Final (best of 3)

Seeding for the Swiss stage will be completely randomized.  Seeding for the Bracket stage will ranked as follows: 1) Your record, 2)  Head-to-head according to Challonge, 3) Buchholz System (with no rounds being thrown out), 4)  Cumulative (add your scores of each round together), 5)  Buchholz system using your opponents scores.  (i.e. If your opponents have Buchholz scores of 5, 7, 4, 6, and 7, this score would equal 29)  6)  "Coin Toss"

Game Rules

All games must use SpeedRunsLive (SRL).  If you have not signed up, please visit their site to do so.   All players must stream their matches.  We recommend saving your streams locally in case you lose connection to Twitch.  You may use a console or an approved emulator to play. All races are blind. The winner will be determined by RaceBot with two exceptions: technical difficulties by a runner or SRL, or the race is decided by 5 seconds or less.  In these cases, the runners may agree on a result. If they do not agree, an administrator will time the race on both streams, then declare a result.

If the margin of victory is determined to be 1.0 seconds or less, "overtime" will commence.  Overtime works as follows: a new seed is created with the same flags EXCEPT very fast XP gains, and the first to level 10 will win the race.   (This should take about 20-30 minutes, depending on seed and settings) If that ends in a margin of victory of less than 1.0 seconds, overtimes will continue until a winner is determined.

The default flags for this tournament will be CDFGMPRWZ.  This will result in everything being randomized, with fast experience speed (75% of normal, -f).  All races will use version 2.0.3 unless declared by the administrators otherwise. Competitors will be allowed to change the following if they both agree:

  • big swamp mode

  • speed hacks

  • fast text

  • experience speed (50%, 75%, or 100%)

  • turning off the menu wraparound

  • turning off the death necklace

  • playing on a later version.

If both racers are having extreme difficulty with a seed in the first few minutes of a race, they may agree to a reseed.

Runners may be asked to race in one four-way restream to maximize restreaming resources, but it will ultimately be up to the runners to allow this.  If there is a four-way restream, there will be two race rooms, with decisions about reseeding happening independently.

No cheating is allowed in this tournament.  This includes a non-exhaustive list of the following:  the use of programs that generate maps, looking at your competitors screen to see where items are or their progress, looking at a restream, or hacking of the RAM to give you items, experience, or gold.  Any cheating discovered will result in penalties ranging from a time penalty, forfeit of the match, or instant disqualification from this tournament and an indefinite ban from future randomizer tournaments.  There may be additional bans of randomizer tournaments in other games as well.

You are welcome to use your chat during the race, but you must take steps to avoid seeing spoilers and backseating.  You can do this by mentioning on your stream that assistance are not permitted(we recommend moderators that can quickly delete assistance) or by closing your chat altogether.

If there are any disputes, an administrator will make the final decision.  If the dispute involves an administrator directly, an alternate judge will be chosen to make the final decision.  Most disciplinary actions will be made public, especially with regards to changing a match result or a disqualification from the tournament.

Match Procedure

Please discuss with your opponent on to discuss when you want to have your match.  These are good methods to contact your opponent:

- Discord (Best method)

- Twitch (whisper)

So your race begins on time, please make it to your match at least 10 minutes early so the restreamer has time to setup and crop your stream.  If you are over 10 minutes late to your race and you give no prior notice, you may be forced to forfeit the match.

.startrace dwhacks - Starts a race

.enter - Join the race

.ready - Ready to begin the race

.done - Use this command when you see the text "And thus the tale comes to an end... unless the dragons return again." (this happens after a brief conversation with the King, and possibly a brief conversation with the princess, after defeating the Dragonlord)

.quit - In case something arises and you have to forfeit the race.

.undone - In case you accidentally typed .done or .quit.

Restreaming / Commentary

All runners will have the option to have their matches restreamed in the Swiss rounds.  All matches in the Bracket rounds MUST be restreamed.  All runners will have full discretion as to who will have restreaming rights for their individual races, but they must ensure that that restreamer is available to restream their race, or the runners risk not having their race restreamed at all.  If a bracket race restream "falls through", the runners must reschedule their race.

Please note that if you schedule your match with less than 12 hours notice, the chances of the match being restreamed will be significantly reduced.  We may ask you to participate in a four-runner restream to maximize our resources, but it will be up to the runners to allow this.

It is very valuable and appreciated by our runners to have their races restreamed, as well as having commentary by two people during their race.  If you think you can do a decent job in either, we strongly recommend that you sign up for this privilege. Commentators will be selected at a rotating basis based on availability of the commentators.  If you are interested, please note that you need to try to be as neutral as possible. Predictions are totally allowed, but "rooting for a competitor" is a big no-no. Additionally, if a commentator thinks that anyone has committed a violation, they are not allowed to announce that on the restream or any competitor's channel.  Instead, they are to message an administrator of the possible foul and let them handle it.

Spectator Rules

Spectators are allowed to chat in a competitor's channel, but once they enter the restream, they should not go back to a runner's channel for the remainder of the match.  No spectator in a competitor's channel is allowed to give information that gives a competitor an advantage. This includes a non-exhaustive list of the following: backseating, giving information about their opponents' progress or giving information about where items are found.  You are also not allowed to mention possible violations of the rules on any competitor's channel during a race.(Please message an administrator if you think a violation has occurred) Penalties will range from warnings to a chat ban from all channels involved in the tournament for the remainder of the tournament.

All spectators are allowed to discuss anything (within normal chat rules) in a restreamed channel with one exception:  if they think that a violation has been committed by a competitor, please refrain from mentioning it on the channel. Instead, please message an administrator of the possible foul, and let them handle it.

Please contact a tournament administrator (mcgrew, gameboyf9, MisterHomes, sparkover, highspirits, jjschmidt77, or angrylarry) if you have any questions with regards to this tournament.
